Troubleshooting Workbook Submissions

Understanding the Preview Window Limitations

The Preview window on the website is a simplified viewer. It’s mainly there so you can confirm that you uploaded the correct workbook and click through the worksheet tabs.

Because it’s only a viewer, it won’t display every Excel feature exactly the way Excel does. For example, one of the graded steps is switching a worksheet into Formula View, and the preview window can’t display that view.

Rest assured that your work is still saved correctly in your workbook—even if the Preview window can’t show every feature.

Having Trouble Submitting Your Workbook?

Don’t worry — your work can still be graded. If the Submit for Grading button isn’t working or your file won’t upload, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Confirm Your File Type

Many assignments begin with an .xltx template file.

If you started with an .xltx file, you must:

  1. Open the .xltx file.
  2. Immediately choose File → Save As.
  3. Save the file as an .xlsx workbook.
  4. Complete your work in the .xlsx version.
  5. Submit the .xlsx file.

Important:

  • Do not submit the original .xltx template file.
  • The template file will not contain your completed work.
  • Only the .xlsx workbook version should be submitted.

Step 2: Quick Checks Before Trying Again

  • Make sure you’re using the desktop version of Excel (Microsoft 365 for Windows or Mac).
  • Confirm your file is saved as .xlsx (not .xltx, .xls, .numbers, or Google Sheets).
  • Close Excel and try submitting again.
  • Make sure your internet connection is stable.

If it still won’t submit, use one of the backup options below.
